why do cashiers always ask how your day is going when they clearly don't cr about teh answer

no they're just asking stupid questions to sound smart
come on, no they're not small talking, they're mindlessly prattling away just to see how much more they can milk out of
yeah, that's what hte retail workers always say. i just want my stuff and to get out of there.
