a more accurate portrayal of "artistic expression" would be struggling to make rent and paying off student loans, not exploiting a fatal addiction for a paycheck

I get where you're coming from, but let's not forget that one way to subvert problematic narratives is to deliberately amplify them and make them look ridiculous. Maybe that's not the most elegant solution, but it's something to consider.
